Indiana Robotics Invitational (IRI) 2013
On Thursday, July 18th, the AdamBots traveled about 300 miles to Fishers, Indiana for the Indiana Robotics Invitational (IRI). IRI is an off-season event where the top teams in the world are invited to play against each other one last time. This year, seventy two teams were invited to this event and sixty nine attended.
The qualification matches started early Friday morning. The AdamBots were off to a rough start for this competition, losing their first qualification match. Unfortunately, the AdamBots also lost their second qualification match by three disc points. In this qualification match, the climbing points were equal and there were no fowl points given. Although the third qualifying match was good for the AdamBots’ alliance members, the feeder wheel broke on Persephone, causing a needed repair by the pit crew. Despite the difficulties in the third match, the AdamBots and its alliance emerged victorious. Between the third and fourth matches, the pit crew was successful fixing the robot and in the fourth qualification match the AdamBots’ alliance won 203:188. After its victorious match, the AdamBots were on an alliance that needed a defensive robot. The alliance discussed options, and the AdamBots were sent to make simple modifications to their robot. The team’s pit crew added cut up pool noodles to the side of Persephone hoping it would block discs that were being shot from the feeder station at the far end of the field. The AdmBots’ tried to make this modification work, but it was not enough, and the alliance ended up losing the match by 233:125. Although the AdamBots tried, the other alliance was able to shoot too fast and had two robots that were able to climb to the third level and score in the 5 point goal. This match was the last qualification match the AdamBots had for that day.
On Saturday, July 20th the team was back and ready to win. The AdamBots’ sixth, seventh, and eight qualification matches were won with accurate scoring, good defense, and a quick human player. The team was very excited that they were doing better than the previous day. In the AdamBots’ ninth and final qualification match there was a problem with the scoring mechanisms on Persephone. This made it so the team was only about to score about 50% of their shots. Although there were problems, the AdamBots did a ten point climb, defended well, and won the match 192:157. The team was ecstatic that they had done very well that day with qualifications and were hoping to do just as well in the finals.
In the finals, the AdamBots were picked to be on an alliance with 3947 and 624, who were seventh seed. Together, the alliance picked team 447 to be the fourth member of the alliance. During the quarter finals against second seed, the alliance fought hard. Each team was ready and the match was intense. Unfortunately, second seed, consisting of teams 1310, 67, 3476, and 8062, won the match 276:218. Nine fowl points were given to second see and they received 50 climb points, whereas seventh seed only got 30 climb points. In the second match for the quarter finals, the AdamBots sat out of the match letting 447 play because the alliance needed a defensive robot. The alliance sadly lost the match and second seed moved up to the semi finals. After winning the semi finals second seed moved up to the finals and were against top seed. After two intense matches top seed won the finals and were very excited about it. The teams in the top seed alliance were 1114, 2056, 1334, and 2337, all of which were from Canada.
The AdamBots congratulate the top seed for their win and appreciate the opportunity to attend IRI this year. We, the AdamBots, would like to thank all of our mentors for the time they put in this past season and FIRST for making all this possible. Good luck to all teams next season and we hope to see you there! Written by Grace Nguyen
