2017 Blogs: May and June
The end of FIRST competitions doesn’t mean the end of our work! Between outreach, off-season competitions, and celebrating the past year, the AdamBots are staying busy as ever. We held our annual banquet at Addison Oaks Park on June 1st. There’s certainly a lot to celebrate—with six trophies and seven safety awards, 2017 is our most decorated year! After the dinner, we congratulated our mentors, calling them one at a time to thank them for their hard work on the AdamBots. A special acknowledgement was given to Mr. Hildebrandt to commemorate his 20 years of mentoring. Then the nine seniors said their goodbyes and shared some words of wisdom. We will miss them next year and wish them luck in the future! Next came varsity letters. These are earned by active members of at least two years who are in good standing with the team, assist with team service projects, and maintain good grades. Eleven AdamBots became Rochester Adams varsity students this year! On a less serious note, paper plate awards were also given out. These are fun, student-made trophies that point out each person’s unique qualities and special moments. Overall, the banquet was a nice wrap-up of this year’s accomplishments and memories.
Despite our success, there is always more we can learn. As such, the business planning subteam met with local CEO Paul Glantz on June 6th. He taught us a bit about how the skills we are learning today apply in the real world. As a parent of two FIRST alumni, he was glad to help our program with both knowledge and a sponsorship from Proctor Financial. Emagine Theatres even donated popcorn to be sold at the Relay for Life!
One of the biggest ways we give back to the community is through the Relay for Life. This is a charity that is very close to our hearts, as several AdamBots families have been afflicted with cancer. We have been fundraising through taking donations for pink rubber ducks and luminaries all spring. On May 28th, we met with teams 5436, 201, and 302 for a Road Rally! In addition to having fun and bonding, the event raised nearly $500. At the banquet, we held a silent auction with robotics-related items. The 2017 fundraising concluded with the Greater Rochester Relay for Life event. All day we walked around the track, sold food and drink, and offered carnival games. In total we raised $8,788 this year, making us the top team donor for four straight years!
The AdamBots performed numerous demos during the start of the summer. The team took the 2016 FRC robot Valencia to the Boys Scouts Troop 360 and our sponsors Valeo and ThyssenKrupp. We shot foam balls with the robot for kids to catch, and then the kids would bowl the balls back into the robot and the process would repeat. In one of other demos, the AdamBots allowed the employee’s at ThyssenKrupp to drive the robot! They also explained the detailed processes of maneuvering and the robot design to the audience. These demos were a great start to the summer, and a lot of fun for both the demonstrators and the onlookers!
