2019 FRC Blogs: Kingsford District Event
Last Thursday, the AdamBots traveled to Kingsford in the Upper Peninsula for our second competition of the year. Thursday night, we ran a few practice matches and succeeded in filling a rocket with scoring objects. With a few rounds under our belt, we felt ready for the next day of qualification matches.
Throughout Friday, we competed in nine qualification matches. We ended the day with four wins and four matches lost by less than a five-point margin. Nonetheless, we managed to have the highest offensive power rating and score the second-most balls. In addition to competing, the AdamBots provided a large force for helping out at the event. With other teams, we provided extensive mechanical and programming support. With the event, we served by providing field technical and controls systems support, volunteer coordination, and field reset roles. It was hard to find a place at the event where a yellow shirt wasn’t helping out.
On Saturday, we ended the qualification matches ranked 11th, but optimistic about alliance selection. We ended up being selected for the third alliance by Team 6569 Gladiators in addition to Team 1596 Instigators. Together, we made it through the quarterfinals and semifinals to face the first alliance in the finals. In the first finals match of three possible, we came away with a narrow win of 78-73. In the second match, our robot failed to move, leading to a score of 38-68 and forcing a tiebreaker. At the end of the tiebreaker, we were down 51-70, but the referees were deliberating on a foul by our opponents. After five agonizing minutes of discussion, the scores came up, and we won the event with a score of 72-70!
In addition to winning the event, the AdamBots were awarded the Safety Award for safety practices and the Gracious Professionalism Award for supporting our competitors. Combined with our two finals appearances this year, we’re finishing the week with 122 district points and ranked 6th of 542 in the state!
