2019 FRC Blogs: World Championship
At the end of April, the AdamBots competed in the FIRST Championship, hosted at Cobo Hall in Detroit! This event features over 400 high school FRC teams as well as hundreds of middle and elementary school teams, bringing together the best in the world to inspire students and crown champions. We competed in the Darwin division against 67 other world-class teams.
The competition began on Thursday with early qualification matches. We had an outstanding performance, winning three and losing one by a margin of 85-87. This placed us in a top-ten position for the day. After matches ended for the day, we went to Ford Field for the Welcome Party, where our students enjoyed live music and games. On Friday, we continued our qualification matches. We had a few tough match-ups, but won where we could and ended with a 7-3 record and the 12th spot!
Saturday began with alliance selection. We were selected to join the 8th alliance alongside Team 51 Wings of Fire, Team 2771 Code Red, and 236 Techno Ticks. Matched up against the first alliance, we had one of our best performances all season, but did not move further into the elimination bracket. For the rest of the day, we watched other teams compete.
The conclusion of the World Championship could not have been more exciting. The Darwin alliance narrowly made it into the finals match to play the undefeated Archimedes alliance. In the first finals match, Archimedes won 107-101 off of six foul points. In the second, Archimedes missed their climb, leading to a 78-96 score and a tiebreaker match. With twenty seconds left in the tiebreaker, the Darwin alliance had a comfortable lead, but Team 217 fell from their climb, costing major points. Team 3707 managed to salvage a climb but the scores remained unknown. After minutes of deliberation, the scores came up with a 90-91 victory for the Darwin alliance of Team 3707 Technodogs from Brighton, Team 217 ThunderChickens from Sterling Heights, Team 4481 from the Netherlands, and Team 1218 Vulcan from Philadelphia.
The 2019 season has been one to remember for the AdamBots. On the field, we reached the finals in all three district events and took home one victory. Off the field, we won an award at each district event and at the State Championship, marking three years running of the State Entrepreneurship Award. Tomorrow, we’ll be celebrating our season with our team banquet at Addison Oaks.
