Our Solution: Valentina

Our robot is named Valentina to honor the first female astronaut Valentina Tereshkova.  She was the first woman to travel into space in June 1963.  She was a Soviet Union Cosmonaut.

The Game

In Destination: Deep Space, two alliances, each with three robots, attempt to obtain as many points as possible by filling a rocket and a cargo ship with orange balls (“cargo”) and retaining it with plastic hatch panels. More cargo in the rockets and cargo ship means more points for the alliance. In addition, alliances can score more points by climbing a series of steps at the end of the match.

The Field

POWER UP game field

Destination: Deep Space is played in the field, a 27 ft. by 54 ft. carpeted field. Each side of the field features two Rockets, a Cargo Ship, and a HAB platform.  The Cargo Ship is located in the center of the field, directly on the line separating the alliances.

Game Pieces

Destination: Deep Space features many diverse game pieces, such as the previously mentioned Rockets, Cargo Ship, HAB platform, as well as the cargo (a 13 inch orange ball) and hatch panels (a toroid with a 19in diameter and a 6in hole). The rockets and cargo ship can be filled with cargo, and have hatch panels placed on the outside to retain the cargo, as only cargo present inside a rocket/cargo ship is counted if it is still present at the end of the match.

Sandstorm Period

The first fifteen seconds of each Deep Space match is the sandstorm period, in which a mechanically operated curtain blocks the view of the drivers. During this time, the robots can operate autonomously, the drivers can drive with a vision system, or the drivers can drive blindly.

Teleoperated Period

After the Sandstorm Period, the remaining two minutes and fifteen seconds of the match is the teleoperated period, where student drivers control the robots to fill up the Cargo Ship and Rockets and prepare for departure from Planet Primus. During the Teleoperated period, cargo and hatch panels can be manipulated and robots can climb the HAB platform for extra points.
