1999: Double Trouble

Double Trouble consisted of alliances of two teams each that had to position “floppies,” robots,  and a “puck” on the playing field. Each alliance competed to rack up the most points possible.

The Field

Double Trouble was played on a carpeted, rectangular area. The alliance stations were located on opposite sides of the field. Human player stations were located along the perimeter where human players were able to throw in floppies to each other or onto the playing field.

Game Pieces

Floppies were light weight, pillow-like objects with Velcro-loop material located in its center and around its perimeter. Each floppy was color coded to distinguish between the alliances. The puck was a short, octagonal platform that rolled freely on wheels.

Game Period

At the start of the match, each human player had three floppies. Four floppies per alliance were located somewhere on the playing field. Alliances had to throw their floppies over the playing field that was not in contact of the playing field. Floppies positioned at higher locations would earn more points. Any robot that resided on a puck would earn additional points. The game period lasted for two minutes.

Scoring

Floppies were worth one point each; however, if a floppy was eight feet or more above the playing field, the alliance would gain three points. Robots that were on a puck would multiply the alliance’s score by 3. If a puck was entirely on one side of the dividing line that ran through the middle of the field, the alliance whose alliance station was furthest back would have their score multiplied by a factor of 2. The alliance with the most points at the end of the match would win.
