2004: FIRST Frenzy

FIRST Frenzy consisted of two alliances, each with two teams, that had to pass balls to the human players and shoot them into fixed and moveable goals. They competed to score as many of the balls as possible during the two minute and 15 second match.

Field

FIRST Frenzy was played on a 24 feet wide by 48 feet long field. Alliance stations were located on opposite sides of the field and  a ten-inch chin bar was in the center of the field on a deck. The portable goals were on either side of the chin bar. Two fixed goals resided on the left and right ends on the deck.

Game Pieces

The balls that were passed through the chutes to the human player measured 13 inch in diameter and resembled a basketball. There were also three 30 inch balls located throughout the field that could be placed on top of any goal by a robot.

Autonomous Period

Teams were able to pre-program their robot to perform certain functions and maneuvers without control of the drivers. Alliances had to knock yellow balls off a pole to earn a small bonus and, in turn, the balls which were stored were released. If an alliance succeeded in doing this, they were able to collect and score balls immediately. The autonomous mode lasted 15 seconds.

Teleoperated Period

The teleoperated period was after the autonomous period. Here, teams had to rack up as many points as possible during a two minute interval. Alliances needed to push balls into chutes located on the corners of the field so that a human player could access them. Once the human player possessed the ball, he or she could throw the balls into one of the portable or fixed goals to earn five points. Before the match ended, teams began to cap the goals with multiple balls and hang off of a bar to earn bonus points.

Scoring

The final score was calculated by adding up all of the balls scored in the portable and fixed goals. If the large balls were capped onto the goal, the alliance earned double points for that goal. Robots able to hang on the middle chin bar scored an additional 50 points. The alliance with the highest combined score won the match.
