White Rock Lake

White Rock Lake

White Rock Lake is a man made lake located in East Dallas. The lake was created in 1911 when Dallas damed White Rock Creek to create a larger drinking water supply for the city. The Lake still supplies drinking water for the city, although most water is now supplied by Lake Lewisville. Today the neighborhoods around the lake are some of the most desired areas to live in Dallas.

The lake is surrounded by White Rock Lake Park which features almost ten miles of hiking and bike trials. Those who visit the lake in the beginning of December can see the White Rock Marathon. The White Rock Marathon is one of the top 10 marathons in the United States and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The Dallas Arboretum is also located on White Rock Lake. Visitors will see many sailboats on the lake. Since the ban of motorized boats in 1958 the lake has become famous for its Corinthian Sailing Club and sailboat races. Anglers on the lake can fish for catfish, sunfish, crappie, carp, gar and bass.
